The Nitro Drag Boat Championship!
The Sacramento River runs through Red Bluff located in Northern California. Each year a branch of the river is diverted, cleared, cleaned up and laser sights used to line up the racing buoys and lanes.
Top Fullers get up to 260 MPH running on nitromethane and pure methanol! The adrenaline rush of seeing a boat go that fast in a quarter-mile is breathtaking.
The world record is 264 mph, was set two years ago at Red Bluff. A quarter of a mile in 4 seconds one of most intense sensory experiences you'll ever see and feel. 7000 nitro fueled Horsepower scream power...the sound pounds your chest and you literally get goose bumps as they fly down the liquid quarter mile! Awesome! We could hear the boats and tell what type of class was racing at over 5 miles away at Jan and Mary Kay's house. That gives an indication of the power and volume of sound these engines produce!
The completion is broken down into classes of boats based on hull type, fuel type, age or drivers etc. Competition Classes are Top Fuel Hydro; Top Alcohol Hydro; Top Alcohol Flat; Pro Modified; Pro Comp Eliminator; Pro Eliminator; Modified Eliminator; Stock Eliminator; River Racer and Personal Water Craft, which is split into Junior Division, ages 9-16, and Senior Division, 17 and up; Top Eliminator; Super Stock and K-Boats.
We stayed at Jan and Mary Kay's house in Red Bluff and went out on the town several times! Izzy Osborn was playing in the Palomino Room and made the night complete! Oh yea the Ultimate Cage Fighter girls were pretty cool too, and no they did not kick my ASS! but they could have.
